2021: Emerging

The last 18 months have been a whirlwind of change. Our lives have been turned inside-out in how we live, work, and relate with others. Life has always been a balancing act- dynamic equilibrium. But now we have an entirely new, strange set of circumstances to navigate. Many of us have experienced changes in work in entering entirely different careers or changing where we work (remote vs. in person). Socializing has taken on new dimensions as actual human contact has been replaced with Zoom gatherings.

As the newness of this wears off and the situation seems more mundane, let's pause and recognize we are still stressed. We still need human contact. We still need to take care of ourselves. What does self care look like in the midst of this scramble? How do we make caring for ourselves sustainable? I've found that little things can make the biggest difference, and they don't seem overwhelming. Here are my top three:

  1. Each morning I do 10 minutes (or so) of yoga. Within a couple weeks of starting my body feels less sore, I feel a little less stressed and a little stronger. I avoid timing my sessions or adhering to a strict protocol. Instead I feel where my body holds tension and give attention to those parts.

  2. Drink more water. After 10am I switch to water or herbal tea. This keeps me hydrated and I avoid excess caffeine, and drinking caffeine later in the day. But I still get to have my morning coffee :-)

  3. When working from home (updating my website, working on social media posts, doing accounting) I get up once an hour and move around. Sometimes this means changing the laundry and folding clothes. Sometimes it is hanging out in the back yard with the dogs for 5 minutes. It gives my brain a break and allows my body to move. After all motion is lotion!
